Visit the Algarve's history and culture

Discover the history and culture of the Algarve. The five hundred years (from the 8th to the 13th centuries) of Moorish presence in Al Gharb, which is Arabic for “to the west”, left a strong legacy and it was also in the Algarve, mainly in the areas of Lagos and Sagres, that Prince Henrique, the Navigator, the main architect of the Portuguese Discoveries, left testimony of the times and glorious conquests of the 15th century. From Vilamoura, we can recommend several excursions for a different day!

A tour of the Sotavento Algarve, passing through Faro, Tavira and Vila Real de Santo António. In Faro, be sure to visit the Ria Formosa Natural Park, and the Old Town, including the Cathedral and the Castle. In Tavira, discover fantastic beaches and islands, go up to the castle for fantastic views of the ocean and be amazed by the regional crafts. In Vila Real de Santo António, right on the border with Spain, stroll around Praça Marquês de Pombal and the riverside area and try one of the many restaurants serving local cuisine.

Another suggestion is a route through the mountains and the west coast, exploring Silves, Monchique and Aljezur. This route has as its first stop Silves, one of the oldest cities in Portugal, where it is worth visiting the Castle, erected by the Moors on Roman foundations in the 11th century, the Cathedral and the dam on the river Arade. Then travel to Monchique, located on the mountain that separates the Algarve from the Alentejo and where you can find the highest point in the Algarve. The route ends in Aljezur, where, in addition to the Castle and Igreja da Misericórdia, you can find beautiful beaches on the west coast of Portugal.

The options are very varied for trips to discover the Algarve!
